THE DETECTIVE

As Heather attempted to slink away, Amanda intercepted her, blocking her path and pushing her backward toward Tina’s office via an invisible force field.

“What the hell, Dinkley?” Heather hissed under her breath, jumping from side to side as she tried to dodge the officer. Much larger than Heather in height and breadth, Amanda thwarted every attempt at escape with little effort.

Her patience already wafer-thin, Heather fantasized about socking the woman in the face and storming away. To her surprise, it didn’t make her feel any better. Maybe there’d been enough violence for one day, or perhaps she didn’t hate her colleague as much as she thought she did. Probably the former, she figured. It made more sense.

“What is it?” Tina snapped, looking up angrily as Amanda and Heather entered the room. “What could it possibly be now?”

“They found him,” Amanda panted. “They found Harvey Lynch.”

“Where? Who’s they? Was Violet with him?” Heather demanded.

Amanda, scarily tall up close, looked down at Heather, and Heather took two steps back, their proximity too intimate and Amanda’s coffee breath potent. Amanda cleared her throat, clearly trying hard to remember everything that Heather had just asked her.

“A chicken coop. The Sullivans found him curled up in there. Violet wasn’t with him,” she answered, her words frustratingly slow as she racked her malfunctioning brain.

Logically, Heather knew she was just trying her best, but that didn’t make her stumbling any less frustrating.

“Are they okay?” Heather asked, remembering that their flighty jailbird was armed.

“They’re fine. They’re bringing him over now actually.”

“They’re bringing him over?” Tina asked incredulously while Heather spluttered, choking on her own saliva. “Exactly my thoughts, Heather. Why on earth didn’t you send someone out to arrest him?”

Amanda looked back and forth between her superiors, the pink of her cheeks consuming the rest of her face. “They insisted. They said he was ‘drunk as a skunk’ and of no harm to anybody. Apparently, he was waving his gun around, but Peggy snatched it.”

“Christ,” Heather muttered, imagining a thousand alternative scenarios, all of which ended with the shooting of a human or poultry bystander. However, she was grateful that Harvey hadn’t been given the opportunity to run off for a third time, drunk and armed.

“They should be here in twenty minutes, give or take,” Amanda added sheepishly, clearly hoping the good news would outweigh her failure to follow protocol.

“Great,” Heather said, clicking her neck. “I can’t wait to grill this asshole. It’s been a long day. I could do with a figurative punching bag.”

“He’s drunk. We’ll have to wait for him to sober up before you can sink your teeth in,” Tina noted, distaste on her tongue.

Heather swallowed expletives. “How long will that take?”

“If he’s as drunk as they say he is, I’d say we’ll probably have to wait until morning.”

“Awesome,” Heather said sarcastically.

“Take it as an opportunity to go get some rest,” Tina suggested. “We’ve got him now. The interrogation can wait.”

“What about Violet? She’s still out there somewhere. What if she needs water or something?”

“Heather,” Tina said softly.
